The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education of Sri Lanka has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National University of Singapore (NUS), strengthening international collaboration in higher education.
The agreement was formally signed on 26 May 2025 by Nalaka Kaluwewe, Secretary to the Ministry, at the Higher Education premises in Sri Lanka. On behalf of Singapore, the MoU was signed earlier on 05 May 2025 by Thean Voon Yew, Provost of NUS, following Cabinet approval granted on 28 April 2025.
Initial discussions for this partnership began in February 2025, with both parties finalizing the agreement in April. The signed document was subsequently transmitted through the Sri Lankan High Commission in Singapore before being formalized locally.
This strategic partnership with the globally ranked National University of Singapore is expected to create significant opportunities for Sri Lankan students and academics. Key initiatives include doctoral scholarships, faculty exchange programs, undergraduate fellowships, joint research collaborations, and shared academic and scientific activities.
Further discussions are planned to ensure effective implementation of the MoU and to expand future collaboration.
This initiative reflects Sri Lanka’s commitment to strengthening global education partnerships and advancing its vision of developing a skilled, knowledge-driven workforce aligned with the national goal of building “A Civilized Citizen – An Advanced Human Resource.”
